IMPORTANCE OF DRYER VENT CLEANING

Did you know that dryer vent fires are more common than chimney fires?

Flammable lint, dirt and dust accumulates rapidly inside the dryer vent with regular use.

Dryer Vent Before and After Cleaning

The Ontario Fire Marshall recommends that:

  • the inside of your dryer cabinet should be cleaned periodically by a qualified individual, every 2-3 years, or more frequently, depending on usage
  • vents and ducts should be inspected and cleaned on a regular basis

If the vent is clogged with lint, the air won't be able to circulate properly, the clothes won't dry, and the dryer runs longer, which wears it out faster and wastes energy- which costs more money. Most dryer manufacturers recommend that residential dryer ducts be cleaned annually for fire prevention and energy saving reasons. Another problem created by blocked dryer vents serving gas dryers is the possibility of carbon monoxide leaks into the home.  If the dryer is not exhausting properly to the outdoors, carbon monoxide can back up into the house... causing a very dangerous- yet preventable- situation.

demonstration of lint build up leading to fires.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission in the U.S. recommends that to help prevent fires:

  1. Clean the lint screen/filter before or after drying each load of clothesClean the dryer vent and exhaust duct periodicallyClean behind the dryer, where lint can build upReplace plastic or foil, accordion type ducting material with rigid or corrugated semi-rigid metal duct
  2. Take special care when drying clothes that have been soiled with volatile chemicals.

In the U.S. in 1997, 16,800 residential fires were reported and the source of the fire was the dryer or the vent.  These fires caused $97.3 million in damage, 430 civilian injuries, and 30 deaths. (Consumer Products Safety Commission).
