HOW DOES THE CLEANING PROCESS WORK?

Here at DUCTS 101 we use state-of-the-art source removal to remove all contaminants and debris. The following is our procedure to make sure that we leave your ducts and the air clean:

  1. The supply and return networks are separated, so they can be cleaned independently. This is done by removing the furnace filter, inserting it into a plastic bag and reinserting it into the furnace.
  2. An access hole is cut into the supply plenum and the flex duct from the HEPA-AIRE vacuum inlet is connected to the plenum with a quick-connect attachment collar.
  3. The register and boot areas are blasted with compressed air using the special air booster gun to push any dirt or debris into the branch run.
  4. The branches are then cleaned by feeding the forward AIRE-SWEEP assembly down each branch run to push dirt and debris forward into the main run. The branches can also be cleaned using the reverse AIRE-SWEEP if access to the branch duct is available at the main supply duct.
  5. Agitation devices such as the power brush or duct whip are also used to dislodge caked on debris from inside duct surfaces.
  6. The loosened debris is pulled backward toward the HEPA-AIRE portable power vacuum and captured in its multi-stage filtration/collection system. One-inch diameter access holes need to be cut only every 25 feet.
  7. Once the supply side of the system has been completely cleaned, the return duct system is cleaned using the same method.
  8. At this stage the coil, motor and blower, and blower compartment are cleaned.
  9. Once the entire cleaning process is completed, all access holes are completely closed with the efficient caplugs and doors that seal off any leaking and make the duct systems easily accessible for repeat cleaning.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?

It depends on the size of the home, the number of systems, extent of contamination and dirt, cleaning equipment and the number of cleaners performing the work. A typical home (12-15 vents) takes a minimum of 3-4 hours, and some homes can take up to 8 hours or more. It's always a good idea to get a couple of estimates from different contractors.

DO YOU APPLY SANITIZER?

Sanitizers are designed to control microbial contamination in the air ducts. They can be applied to the interior of the air ducts after the system has been thoroughly cleaned. Please ensure that the anti-microbial treatment used is registered with the EPA or CSA (there aren't many in Canada) for the approved use on HVAC systems. Request to see the Material Safety Data Sheet, or contact the EPA or CSA to get important information about the intended use of a chemical. Fiberglass surfaces are porous and application of anti-microbial products are not registered in this case. Please note that DUCTS 101 can, but highly discourages, the use of sanitizers except in extreme cases. The long term effects are not known at this time. Keep in mind that you will be breathing it in!

HOW OFTEN SHOULD MY DUCTS BE CLEANED?

Certain factors may determine the frequency of air duct cleaning: smokers, pets, water damage, residents with allergies, asthma or other respiratory problems, home renovations or remodeling and prior to occupying a new home. Industry standards recommend that homes are done every 3-5 years, and more often if the homeowners budget allows for it.

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MY APPOINTMENT?

There isn't a whole lot that you need to do in order to prepare for your appointment; however, there are a few things you can do to help us out!

1) The use of your driveway for our service vehicle.
2) Ample working space in the furnace area.
3) Access to each individual vent throughout your home.

Can we ask to see the work that has been done?

Most Certainly. We not only encourage you to see the results, we hope that you will check in throughout the cleaning so you can see for yourself the time and effort we put into making sure your ducts are completely clean. Ask questions, if you have them. It's your home and you have a right to know what we're doing. The contractor should always allow you to visually inspect the system before and after cleaning. He can give you better access to system components and possibly use specialized inspection tools. However, mirrors can provide a good visual when used properly. At DUCTS 101 we allow you to see what's been collected into the three different filters of our vacuum system when we are finished. Seeing is believing!
